Formal historic flatware sets included a gratuitous number of pieces that were included for specific use. Beyond the spoons that are familiar from our modern day use, such as the soup spoon, teaspoon, iced tea spoon and measuring spoons, there are in existence highly particular spoons such as the: mustard spoon, ice cream spoon, grapefruit spoon, olive spoon, jelly spoon, orange spoon, coffee spoon, bouillon spoon, etc.– that speak to a lifestyle of excessive and specificity. There is some absurdity in embracing a standard of consumption that celebrates, if not requires, a unique specialty spoon for each culinary need. My collection of modern day specialty spoons continues this trend of silliness with the inclusion of the Boba Spoon, the Cool Whip Serving Spoon and the Backpacker Meal Spoon.
