This is a set of 6 hand-painted, terracotta soup spoons, made in the style of Chinese soup spoons, which are often porcelain. I took the theme of the show quite literally here, referencing spoons as an actual functional object.
These spoons are an extension of my regular practice, where hand-built terracotta pieces serve as colorful palettes to liven tablescapes, often featuring whimsical illustrations and playful forms. My ceramics explore the technical relationships between form and color, while conceptually my work explores ideas of sustenance and care, labor, and play. These spoons are a modern take on a more traditional Chinese object.
