My hand-forged silver flatware begins as thick rods of sterling silver that are laboriously hammered into shape, then filed and finished, also by hand.
The unique nature of the hand-forging process means that no two pieces will be identical. Typically, I create each piece individually, working on one at a time. For this exhibition, I decided to work on three spoons simultaneously, switching back and forth between them. Each spoon in this set began with the same size silver bar and I shortened the length of the material that was dedicated to the bowl portion on the spoon by approximately 6 mm on each; this creates the feeling that the spoons are related, yet different. I enjoy the idea that every spoon I create, by virtue of the handmade process, is idiosyncratic and not reproducible, as are the humans who will use them.
